Berliners are a classic treat, especially on Rosenmontag. These soft, jam-filled doughnuts are a favorite for many, though I don’t eat them often because they’re quite sweet. Every year, my company offers them to employees, always sticking to the traditional version—fluffy dough, fruit filling, and a dusting of powdered sugar.
My two-year-old daughter loves Berliners. The moment she sees one, her excitement is contagious. She takes tiny bites, enjoying the soft texture and sweet center. Since they’re sugary, we limit how much she eats, but even a small portion makes her happy. Watching her get powdered sugar all over her face is always an amusing sight.
My husband, on the other hand, is a true sweet tooth. Whether it’s the classic Berliner or one with a chocolate glaze, he enjoys them all. While I might hesitate, he’s always eager to indulge, happily finishing any extras.
Though the Berliners at work are always the traditional kind, bakeries offer endless variations. Some are covered with chocolate or caramel glazes, while others might be sprinkled with colorful toppings like M&Ms. Fillings range from vanilla cream to eggnog custard, adding even more indulgence. My husband occasionally brings home new flavors, always eager to try something different. While I don’t crave them, I find it interesting how much creativity goes into these pastries.
Despite not being a fan myself, I appreciate the role Berliners play in celebrations. At work, they bring people together for a shared moment of enjoyment. At home, they create little pockets of joy—whether in my daughter’s delighted bites or my husband’s enthusiasm. Even if I don’t reach for one, I enjoy being part of the tradition.
