In Germany, where I work, I’ve come to appreciate something that may seem simple but has a huge impact on my life: weekends and generous vacation days. As an employee, having two days off every week and 30 days of annual leave has really improved my work-life balance, especially when it comes to spending quality time with my husband and daughter.
Unlike some countries where people often work six days a week, in Germany, the standard workweek is just five days. This means we get a well-deserved break over the weekend. These two days might seem short, but they’re crucial for recharging and making memories with my family.
Weekends aren’t just time off work; they’re a chance to bond with my loved ones. Whether it’s a family outing, a relaxed breakfast, or simply spending time at home, these moments create a sense of balance. I can fully be there for my daughter as she grows and connect with my husband without the stress of work hanging over us.
The importance of weekends stands out even more when comparing work cultures in other countries. In places where six-day workweeks are common, employees often struggle to find time for personal activities or family, leading to stress and burnout.
The generous vacation policy here is just as important. With 30 days of leave, I have the flexibility to take longer breaks and enjoy quality time with my family, whether it’s during holidays or extended trips. This is a sharp contrast to countries where vacation days are limited, leaving little room for relaxation and personal rejuvenation.
It’s important to recognize the privilege of working in a country that values work-life balance. In some parts of the world, intense work pressures can negatively affect both personal and professional life. I feel grateful to live in a place where taking time for family and rest is encouraged.
Having a balanced work-life routine doesn’t just improve personal happiness—it also boosts work performance. Employees who have time for themselves return to work refreshed, with more energy and focus. This creates a healthier, more productive workforce that benefits everyone.
