In June 2015, we embarked on an unforgettable 19-day adventure, covering around 5000 kilometers as we drove from Germany to various captivating destinations. Our trusty companion, the reliable little Polo, carried us through each city without a hitch.
We began in the grandeur of Luxembourg. Known for its medieval architecture and stunning landscapes, the city captivated us with its historic charm. Wandering through the Old Town, we marveled at ancient fortifications and picturesque squares. Luxembourg set the stage for an exciting journey ahead.
Our next stop was Lyon, a city synonymous with gastronomy and old-world charm. Nestled between two rivers, Lyon boasts vibrant markets and delectable cuisine. From the traboules (hidden passageways) to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, Lyon’s rich history unfolded before us. It was a gastronomic and cultural delight.
Marseille welcomed us with its maritime majesty and a blend of French and Mediterranean influences. The bustling Vieux-Port, historic forts, and the iconic Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde offered panoramic views of the city. Marseille’s unique character left an indelible mark on our journey.
Known for its laid-back elegance, Montpellier provided a refreshing contrast to the bustling cities we had explored. The Place de la Comédie, with its lively atmosphere, and the medieval streets of Old Town showcased the city’s relaxed charm. Montpellier left us enchanted with its unhurried pace.
Our adventure then led us to Barcelona, a city brimming with architectural marvels and artistic splendor. From the iconic Sagrada Familia to the vibrant La Rambla, every corner reflected the genius of Antoni Gaudí. Barcelona’s lively energy and cultural richness made it a highlight of our journey.
Valencia, known for its futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, unfolded before us as a modern marvel. The Turia Gardens, the Oceanografic, and the stunning architecture showcased Valencia’s commitment to innovation. The city seamlessly blended tradition with modernity, leaving us awe-inspired.
Our next destination, Madrid, welcomed us with royal grandeur and cultural riches. The Prado Museum displayed artistic treasures, while the Royal Palace offered a glimpse into regal history. Madrid’s lively plazas and vibrant street life reflected the heart of Spanish culture, creating lasting memories.
Bilbao, a city on the rise, introduced us to the avant-garde architecture of the Guggenheim Museum. Nestled along the Nervión River, Bilbao blended tradition with contemporary design. The Basque cuisine and the charming Old Town added layers to our exploration of this evolving city.
Zaragoza unfolded as a tapestry of history, with its ancient landmarks and vibrant culture. The Basilica-Cathedral of Our Lady of the Pillar stood as a testament to religious heritage. Strolling through the Aljafería Palace and exploring the local markets immersed us in Zaragoza’s rich historical fabric.
Toulouse, known as the Pink City due to its terracotta buildings, welcomed us with warmth. The Capitole de Toulouse, the Basilica of Saint-Sernin, and the Garonne River added to the city’s allure. Toulouse’s relaxed ambiance and blend of history and modernity made it a memorable stop on our journey.
Our visit to Versailles transported us to a world of opulence and exquisite gardens. The Palace of Versailles, with its Hall of Mirrors and lavish chambers, showcased French grandeur. Exploring the sprawling gardens and the Petit Trianon provided a glimpse into royal life during the era of Louis XIV.
Our adventure culminated in the enchanting City of Lights – Paris. From the iconic Eiffel Tower to the Louvre Museum, each landmark whispered tales of timeless romance and cultural richness. Parisian streets, bistros, and the Seine River encapsulated the essence of a city that continues to capture hearts worldwide.
Sleeping one or two days in each city allowed us to soak in the essence of our surroundings before eagerly moving on to the next destination.
Despite the packed itinerary, our little Polo proved to be a steadfast partner, never once breaking down during our extensive road trip. The famous tourist spots in each city left lasting impressions.
Beyond the tourist attractions, we made it a point to explore city centers, immersing ourselves in the local culture. Observing the differences between the hustle and bustle of Germans always in a hurry and the relaxed pace of the Spanish added a unique flavor to our journey.
Every city we visited held its own magic, leaving us with cherished memories. The views from Zaragoza to Toulouse were particularly breathtaking, with winding roads through mountains that took us on an adventurous rollercoaster of ascents and descents.
One highlight of our trip was touring the opulent Versailles Palace, a mesmerizing experience that transported us to a bygone era. Each city we explored had its own allure, making us yearn to return someday, hopefully with our little Belle in tow, and with the grace of God, fulfilling that dream.
This adventure wasn’t just about ticking off places on a map; it was a journey of discovery, from the cultural nuances of each city to the stunning landscapes that unfolded before us. As we reflect on those 19 days of exploration, the excitement and joy of our European road trip remain etched in our hearts, fueling our aspirations for future adventures.
