Our First European Adventure: Exploring Amsterdam

In October 2013, my husband and I embarked on our first travel adventure since arriving in Germany in 2013. The destination: Amsterdam. Despite my inability to locate the photos from that memorable trip, the memories are etched in our hearts.

My husband, having grown up in Germany, had not ventured beyond its borders. Amsterdam, therefore, held a special place for both of us as our inaugural European escapade. At that time, we were young and navigating the challenges of a new life, having recently relocated after spending five years together in the Philippines.

As we drove to Amsterdam, the excitement and anticipation filled the air. The city welcomed us with its charming aura, and for the first time, I marveled at the sight of beautiful old buildings, a stark contrast to our surroundings in Germany.

Being on a tight budget, we explored Amsterdam on foot, determined to soak in every bit of its culture and charm. Accustomed to the convenience of 1 euro per hour parking in Germany, we were taken aback by the 5 euros per hour charge in Amsterdam. Undeterred, we wandered through the city’s cobblestone streets, discovering its rich history and vibrant atmosphere.

Our day in Amsterdam stretched for almost nine hours, and each moment was a testament to our humble beginnings. We reminisced about the early days when our pockets were light, but our spirits were high with dreams and hopes for the future. The simplicity of our journey made it all the more special.

Reflecting on our modest start and contrasting it with where we stand today, the trip to Amsterdam remains a cherished memory. It symbolizes not only our first European exploration but also the beginning of a journey that has led us to a place of stability and fulfillment.

Despite the passing years and the changes in our lives, the simplicity and happiness of that day in Amsterdam linger in our hearts. It serves as a reminder that even in our early days, devoid of material wealth, the richness of our experiences and the dreams we shared were more than enough to fill our lives with joy.

Though our visit to Amsterdam lasted only a day, the memories have endured, shaping the narrative of our journey together. The three-hour drive back to our home in Germany was not just a physical journey but a reflection on the distance we had traveled since our humble beginnings. Amsterdam will forever hold a special place in our hearts, a city that witnessed the start of our European adventures and the growth of a life built on love, determination, and shared dreams.
